Under the mandate of and in cooperation with the United Nations’ High Commission for Human Rights (UNHCR), the Special Rapporteur for Human Rights’ activists held a regional consultation on the situation facing Human Rights’ activists, 26-27 January in Guatemala City.
The consultation offered activists from Latin America and the Caribbean to share information on their situation. The format of the conference encouraged exchange of ideas as well as the identification of particular challenges and the promotion of good practices in relation to the components outlined in the mandate. Moreover, the conference was expected to contribute to the establishment of a dialogue between Latin American and Caribbean Human Rights defenders. The conference brought together more than 30 activists and representatives from local and regional NGOS.
Emma Bolshia Bravo Cladera was invited to the aforementioned event where she presented the situation facing Human Rights activists in our country and shared her experiences on: challenges and key opportunities for Human Rights in the region; issues and concerns of specific Human Rights activist groups (e.g. those working in defence of the rights of indigenous communities or migrants, female Human Rights activists, journalists and those working in defence of the environment and the planet)  and good practices.
